So many people today usually have no idea about the many types of dental fillings that we can choose from today. Many people think that there is no need to learn about them though. Most people never ask about fillings, but these are important because it can affect the way you look. Fillings are usually used when your dentist removes cavities. You get tooth cavities when the enamel of your teeth is eroded by the food you eat and the bacterial growth. What needs to be done is to drill out the decay and then replace it with some fillings. In this article, we will be discussing some of the common fillings used by your dentist.

First, we have metal fillings. Metal fillings are usually durable and can last a long time. You can also choose cast gold but it can be very expensive although you will be assured of its quality. Silver or amalgam filling is also another option. It is not that expensive as gold but is also very durable. The downside of having amalgam as your filing is that they do not match the color of your teeth. These are best used for areas where people cannot see it.

Number two, you have composite fillings. This is what dentists use today. This quality material is good for at least ten years before it demands a visit to the dentist. This is apparently the best in value and will look more natural. Many procedures will utilize composite materials because they are easy to use and durable. The only downside to this material is that it can be prone to chipping.

Third, you can opt for a ceramic filling. Ceramic filling is also a natural looking filling. They are resistant to stain and lasts much longer than most fillings. It can be pretty expensive though. It can even exceed the price of gold fillings.

So there you have some of the more common fillings used for your teeth today. The fillings that we discussed are all very different from each other. Make sure that you refer to your budget, the durability of the material and the appearance as well. Better ask your dentist about your options concerning the dental fillings.
